War or Peace on the Korean Peninsula: Dealing with a Nuclear-armed North Korea

EVANS J.R. REVERE is nonresident senior fellow at Brookings’ Center for East Asia Policy Studies.  He is also senior advisor with the Albright Stonebridge Group, a leading global strategy firm.  He participates in numerous Track 1.5 and Track 2 dialogues dealing with U.S. relations with the PRC, the two Koreas, Japan, Taiwan, and East Asian regional security issues.  His commentary on Asia appears frequently in major international newspapers and on television and radio.  

He taught at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School (2010-2011) and was president/CEO of The Korea Society (2007-2010), where he organized the historic 2008 concert in Pyongyang by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. 

In 2007 he retired after a distinguished career as one of the U.S. State Department’s top Asia experts. During his diplomatic career, he served as the acting assistant secretary and principal deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He was charge d’Affaires and deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul (2000-2003). He also served in the PRC, Taiwan, and Japan and was director of the State Department’s offices managing relations with Korea and Japan. 

He has extensive experience dealing with North Korea and served as deputy chief of the U.S. team negotiating with the DPRK and as the U.S. government’s primary day-to-day liaison with North Korea. 

He is fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, and is a graduate of Princeton University, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
