A Rapidly Rising China in the Age of Globalization

Roselyn Hsueh - Assistant Professor of Political Science at Temple ===================================================================================================

All of us have watched with wonder the amazing growth of China’s economy.  We watch also its suppression of Uighur and Tibetan separatism, its expanding military, and its assertive territorial claims in the S. China Sea.  We wonder if we are confronted with a new enemy, or just a powerful new competitor.

Roselyn Hsueh has taught both about and in China.  Her articles have appeared in The Economist, The Washington Post, and Foreign Affairs. She has also appeared on NPR.   Her first book (China’s Regulatory State: A New Strategy for Globalization - Cornell University Press) came out in 2011, and a second book under completion investigates capitalism in the developing world, particularly the role of market economies in China, India, and Russia.  She has testified before the Congressional U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.  Dr. Hsueh grew up in New Mexico and in the San Francisco area, where she received her Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley, and served as Hayward R. Alker Postdoctoral Fellow at USC.
