"Obama's Middle East Challenges: From Afghanistan to the Mediterranean"

We are lucky to have among our members retired ambassador George Lane.  George has spoken to us several times before and has always excited great enthusiasm. He was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland.  During his youth, he was a frequent visitor to Westminster, where his mother was born and where he and his family frequently spent the summer. After receiving his BA from Cornell in 1951, Ambassador Lane spent three years in the US Army,  then two years as an electronics technician, and a year earning an MA at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts, before joining the US diplomatic service in 1957.  During his 30 year career, he served in Washington, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Morocco, Libya, Swaziland, as Ambassador in Yemen and as Political Advisor to the US military headquarters in Europe. Since his retirement to Westminster in 1986, Ambassador Lane has taught courses as an Adjunct Professor at  Clark and Holy Cross and has been active in Westminster town affairs.
