Claudia Fritsche – Ambassador to the US from Liechtenstein
Wedged between Austria and Switzerland, the small Principality of Liechtenstein (yes it still has a prince!) lies at the very heart of the EU, but remains (like Switzerland and Norway) independent of it. When Liechtenstein opened an embassy in Washington in 2002, Claudia Fritsche was named as ambassador. Before that she had served twelve years as the Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the United Nations, and also as Vice-President and Member of the General Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. From June 1999 to September 2002 she was President of the International Association of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. She has also been a leader on feminism, both in her own country and as a member of the European Committee on Gender Equality.
